History

Burg Nordeck The oldest documented reference to Nordeck can be traced back to 1093. The castle and the Lords of Nordeck date back to the 12th century. The castle was then handed over to the Landgraves of Hessen in the middle of the 13th century, who were able to control the road between Mainz and Amöneburg with it. The House of (the Lords of) Nordeck didn’t always show its best side and there was talk of so-called robber barons. At the time of the feudal barons, who were prosecutors and judges in one, the commoners were often subjected to the capriciousness of their lords. The land was only rented out to the farmers and the farmers had to pay their so-called tithe in money or natural produce. The castle frequently changed hands during the years.

With the founding of the boarding school in 1926 Otto Erdmann – a friend and colleague of Paul Geheeb, the founder of the Odenwaldschule, put his idea of an education focusing on the indivdual pupil into effect. The Hessian Ministry of Education and Arts awarded the school the honorary title of School for Special Educational Needs. The boarding school with its wide range of educational possibilities offers an alternative to the state educational system and enriches the regional education system. In order to support privately funded cultural institutions the state allowed donations to be tax-deductable. We would therefore like to draw your attention to the possibility of donating to our acknowledged organization Landschulheim Burg Nordeck e.V. and to the Egon-Trapp-Stiftung. Burg Nordeck During Hessian’s local government reform in 1971 Nordeck joined together with Winnen to form the community of Braunstein. This existed up until 1976 and was then incorporated in the town of Allendorf (Lumda). At the centre of the grounds is the castle, the former residence of the Lords of Nordeck. The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 11th century, as do the lower stories of the 22 metre high tower. The tower offers a beautiful view over the Lumda Valley to the hills surrounding Gießen and to the Vogelsberg.
